Do you or someone you know struggle with anxiety?
Would you like some help to manage and understand it better?
Sometimes when we understand something we can overcome it or at least reduce it.
So here are some things I have learnt along the road of overcoming anxiety.
I hope this helps someone.
1. Are you aware of the level of anxiety you have?
Everyone gets anxiety in it’s various different forms. It’s knowing the level of anxiety you have that helps you in how to manage it. Some people experience anxiety so severely it manifests into panic attacks. This is obviously the extreme anxiety and these people will need support managing it. Then there is mild anxiety “normal” anxiety, this would occur only a few times a month if that, say when the person is running late or something along those lines.
In knowing your level of anxiety on the scale of extreme to mild, you can begin to understand how much support, understanding and action you will need to take to get your anxiety to a manageable place.
2. Anxiety and Excitement are the same sensation.
Did you know that when you are used to having anxiety you can actually confuse excitement for anxiety? Next time you feel those horrible anxious feelings quickly take a second and ask is this excitement? Do I have anything to be anxious about? If not then maybe you are just looking forward to something.
3. If you often have anxiety, your brain can become worried if you are relaxed.
If you are used to having anxiety, then your body and your brain feel uncomfortable if you are relaxed or happy. How annoying is that?
This is because your brain/subconscious mind is designed to keep you safe. So when you are usually in worry mode your brain then thinks you are alert and ready to take on any possible threats. Then when you are relaxed your brain will worry you are unsafe and un-alert to possible threats.
If you are able to identify if this is what is causing your anxiety then by simply using the affirmation I am safe, your anxiety can ease. Use that affirmation again and again until your brain realises you are safe and it is ok to relax and enjoy life.
4. Anxiety could be the cause of other detrimental behaviours.
Things like drinking, over eating, smoking marijuana, even being busy all the time can reduce the uncomfortable feeling that anxiety leaves us with.
If you are filling your schedule up so much that you don’t have any free time is a sure sign of running from uncomfortable emotions such as anxiety. Eating a little extra food can release dopamine and therefor relaxes anxious feelings- wondering why you can’t lose a few kgs, maybe it’s because of anxiety? Wanting to drink less but when every time you slow down on the drinking you feel really uncomfortable, it might be because of anxiety.
If you are reaching for something to mask the sensations of anxiety you may not be able to over come or manage anxiety long term. Running from it or avoiding it means it will always be there. So it’s not nice but looking, facing and feeling's head on is the fastest and best way to overcome it. Do not give anxiety that much power over you, you are in control! You can over come it.
5. A lot of people have anxiety and don’t realise it.
A lot of my clients and myself included have dealt with anxiety but didn’t realise for a long time that it was anxiety that we were feeling. It’s a weird awareness, sensations, train of thought that can be mistaken for something else, or we can even think it's normal. Also as I mentioned earlier, issues such as anxiety can easily be masked by things like drinking, eating heavy foods and being busy. Even social media, people can be blocking out feelings with addictive or excessive behaviour.
6. what are the underlying causes of your anxiety?
By spending time addressing your anxiety head on and asking direct questions about what is causing it you can learn to manage it.
You will then know your triggers and be able to avoid them or talk yourself out of the anxiety. Journaling or having a session with someone who can support you in safely unwrapping causes and events that resulted in anxiety so that then you can address and devolve them.
Here are some journal prompts the may help:
What is causing this? sounds so simple but when you put pen to paper and really go for gold, write everything that comes up and out, you can gain so much understanding. It’s also great to release pent up emotions so you are not carrying them around all day.
Then when the thoughts stop ask yourself- what will it take to clear this? And again write and write until you gain clarity.
Then the final and incredibly affective question. How do I want to feel?
This puts your mind in a positive place so you can move through it and all the way to the other side of it.
You can ask these questions again and again any time anxiety shows up.
Do not underestimate how powerful this exercise is when it comes to clearing the uncomfortable sensations of anxiety.
7. Anxiety can be a learnt behaviour:
People can pick up on the behaviour and patterns of other people. Were your parents worry worts? Always thinking something terrible will happen? If you have anxious parents, friends or people around you then you might have inherited this behaviour pattern. Are you ready to let go of it and return it to them?
8. One of the most important thing you can understand about anxiety is if you are in the present moment and tapping into your senses, anxiety can not exist within that moment.
Anxiety can not coexist inside of the present moment because it is often caused by worry about something. Be it past or future even worry about having anxiety. If you are in the present moment there is no room for worry or thought.
So when you take a deep breath, look around, smell. Wiggle your toes to bring your focus & energy from your mind into your body. This lets the momentum of anxiety stop or slow down and relief can wash over you. You can practice this presence for as long as possible until the anxious thoughts and feelings change to more productive and rational thoughts.
9. Have you got something on hand to use when anxiety arises?
Through my experience with panic attacks and serious anxiety I used to always have a Soul Essence-Flower essence blend close by to use if I ever started to feel it coming on. Flower essences are safe and gentle and I found so much relief from them. Also just having something on you that you know helps can provide a sense of safety. When I used to have a panic attack I couldn’t speak but my husband knew to grab the flower essence straight away and within ten minutes I was able to speak and breath again. It might not take anxiety completely away, but thats because it’s always very important to work through the causes of anxiety and panic attacks but having something that takes the edge off wile doing that is incredible in my opinion. https://www.soulnourish.co.nz/online-store
I also used Homeopathy and Nero emotional technique to address the core issues that I was facing and I believe causing the anxiety. https://www.soulnourish.co.nz/services
If you or anyone you know suffer from anxiety, mild or serious, you have my compassion and understanding for one.
Secondly, please know there are options to lessen the burden.
What ever the cause you can manage it. It might not happen over night but it can get better. Please be sure to get help if and when you need it.
I personally used to have anxiety so bad some days I would become nauseous because of the intensity. If I can overcome it then there is hope for others. If you know someone with anxiety then please be mindful of how consuming it may feel and offer your support when you can.
Sending love to anyone needing it reading this because they are struggling with anxiety.
